Humanity lives inside enormous walls until titans breach them. Serialised from 2009 to 2021 and complete, with an anime adaptation from 2013. Two things come up in every discussion of it: that it is finished, and that the survival story of its opening turns into something of an entirely different character later on.
The early run follows survival-action grammar against an overwhelming threat. Once the question of what lies beyond the wall starts to resolve, the axis shifts from survival to history and politics. As the enemy's nature becomes clear, who is aggressor and who is victim blurs, and the audience is made to re-examine the side it was cheering for. That turn is also where opinion divides most sharply.
Graphic violence and heavy themes run throughout, so it is not light viewing. Minor early lines and images acquire meaning much later, which rewards attention over skimming. The anime changed production studio partway, shifting the directing tone β knowing that in advance makes the transition less jarring.
